Frequently Asked Questions

COMMON QUESTIONS WE'VE BEEN ASKED THROUGH TIME
Direct Cremation

What is "Direct Cremation"?

Direct cremation refers to the process of cremating a deceased person's body shortly after death, without a prior funeral service or viewing arranged by the funeral home. This option is more cost-effective and quicker compared to a traditional burial.

Why do you need to know the weight of my loved one?

We inquire about weight to guarantee that we have enough personnel for transportation. Our main concern is to safely take care of your loved one. A rough estimate is acceptable, and it's better to overestimate than underestimate.

Can I be present during the cremation process?

This process is referred to as a, "Witness Cremation". Witness cremation involves observing the placing of the fiberboard container or coffin into the cremation chamber. Currently, we do not provide this service. However, we do permit any desired moments with your loved one before they are brought into our care. We can also direct you to a trusted funeral homes whom we work closely with who offer this type of service.

Are there any hidden fees or charges if we decide to use your services?

At Direct Cremation LA, we strive for transparency and simplicity in all aspects of our services. This applies to our pricing as well. We believe in being upfront and honest, which is why there are no surprise fees or charges. Our direct cremation package is all-inclusive, covering everything from credit card fees to state tax. You can trust that what you see is what you'll get, with no hidden costs involved.

Why aren't certified death certificates included?

Each certified copy of a death certificate costs $24 as charged by the state. As a convenience to our clients, we handle the ordering of these certificates on your behalf, including the state fee in the final invoice, so you don't have to go through the county. There are no additional fees for ordering the certificates. We can either provide the certificates to you along with the urn, or send them to you through mail.

What takes place during the cremation process?

All cremations are performed on an individual basis. The decedent is placed in a rigid, flammable, and covered container and then placed inside the cremation chamber. The entire process takes between four to five hours, including the actual cremation and the cooling of the remains. Any non-cremated materials (such as medical implants) are removed, and the remains are processed and reduced to a uniform size. On average, the amount of remains will be around five pounds, and the color may vary based on various factors.

How do you ensure we are receiving the correct ashes?

Direct Cremation LA is dedicated to providing the highest quality practices and services in the industry. Upon requesting DCLA's services, a unique identifier is generated and remains consistent throughout the services. There are also specific legal requirements in each state for the disposition process, which include a metal tag and a unique ID that accompany the deceased person during the cremation process and are documented in all necessary paperwork and permits.

What happens to Social Security for my loved one?

If your loved one was receiving Social Security benefits at the time of their passing, you may be eligible for a one-time payment of $255 or ongoing monthly benefits from Social Security. Direct Cremation LA will notify Social Security of your loved one's death when you provide us with their Social Security number. To determine if you are eligible to receive benefits, please call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a nearby Social Security office. Find out if any forms are required or which benefits you may be eligible for. If you were already receiving benefits for your loved one, you likely won't need to reapply. In the event that your loved one receives a Social Security payment after they have passed and did not survive for the entire month of that payment, you will need to return it to Social Security. For instance, if your loved one passed away in April and you received a benefit payment for them in May, you would need to return it because they did not survive the entire month of April. Please return any checks as soon as possible.
